Under-Study
St. Helena's Exceptional New Culinary Playground
We’ve been visiting Under-Study since it opened in St. Helena, and it's quickly become one of our favorite spots in Napa Valley. This new café and marketplace bills itself as a "culinary playground," and that playful spirit shines through in everything they do—without ever compromising on quality.
The Pastries Are Outstanding
Let's talk about the pastries, because they're truly exceptional. The viennoiserie—croissants, pain au chocolat, and the like—are expertly laminated with that perfect shatter and buttery layers you hope for but rarely find. But what we love most is how they reimagine classics with creativity and whimsy. Their cookies, mousses, and jewel-box desserts manage to feel both familiar and surprising. Each pastry shows meticulous craft and real technical skill.
The Food Delivers Across the Board
Beyond the pastries, the café menu is excellent. Their breakfast bites and savory small plates are thoughtfully executed—refined but approachable, creative without being overwrought. The bread program is also noteworthy; they work with freshly milled organic flours and ancient grains to produce daily loaves with real character and depth of flavor.
A Welcome Addition to St. Helena
Understudy has found a sweet spot: serious craft with a joyful, experimental spirit. The curated wine selection (84 bottles, mostly European) and marketplace feel make it perfect for a morning coffee and pastry or picking up provisions. In a valley known for culinary excellence, Understudy stands out by balancing precision with playfulness—and delivering genuinely delicious food at every turn.
Bottom line: Exceptional pastries, lovely food throughout, and a vibe that makes you want to return. Highly recommended!
Pet friendly tip: They have outdoor seating at the patio of next door Press restaurant where your pet is welcome to join you!
